We collaborate with all stakeholders to collectively develop the Geopark as a sustainable tourism destination.  We are active members of the Burren Ecotourism Network, winners of the Lonely Planet award in its “Best in Travel Picks for 2021”, being named Best Community Tourism Project. The Burren Ecotourism Network comprises over 60 local enterprises, all working together with the same objective of establishing an internationally recognised sustainable tourism region.

We actively participate in conserving our natural and cultural heritage. We take part in clean ups, adopt a hedgerow scheme and advocate the Leave No Trace principles amongst our staff and guests, so that we all show respect for our environment.

We offer quality information and interpretation to communicate our stories and the unique character of the Buren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark to our guests.  This information is available both on our website and in-house. We partake in training, networking and educational events to keep ourselves informed, so that we can relay this information to our guests.

We work to ensure that tourism makes a positive social contribution so that it benefits our community as well as our guests. We participate in local activities and support fundraising events.

We contribute to the local economy by maintaining and supporting local employment, by sourcing services and produce locally wherever possible and by engaging with other businesses in promoting our region as a sustainable tourism destination. We provide visitors with ample information (both online and in-house) on where to go and what to do, thus making it an easy decision for them to stay longer in this wonderfully unique area.

We work to an Environmental Action Plan, which includes actions and targets for improvement that are reviewed annually. We have effective systems for monitoring and adequately managing our waste, water, wastewater, energy, travel impact and purchases as we endeavour to reduce our carbon footprint.

• We are committed to reducing our waste to landfill and separate between general refuse, recyclable and compostable waste. We encourage our guests to do the same by providing designated bins in our bedrooms/bathrooms.
• We are committed to reducing our use of plastic and have replaced all plastic water bottles with glass ones in our bedrooms and dining room (all bottles are reusable).
• In our bathrooms we use refillable toiletries.
• In our dining room, we avoid the use of singly-packaged products and we use cloth napkins as opposed to paper ones.
• In our kitchen we use reusable storage containers wherever practical.
• In our office, all of our paper is recycled and we try to print only what is necessary.

We monitor our use of water and have taken many measures to reduce our usage by means of water saving jet regulators for all of our taps and showers while cistern floats have been adjusted, so that they use 6lt instead of 9lt per flush.

We collect rainwater for use in our garden – see our action plan for plans for rainwater harvesting for use in the entire business.

We have a bio-chemical wastewater system which is serviced regularly by a reputable company.

We monitor our energy use regularly and have taken the following measures to reduce our consumption and dependence on fossil fuels:

• We have recently converted from oil to Biogas for all our heating and hot water needs, thus reducing our carbon emissions by up to 38%.
• This is also supported by 24 sq m of solar panels.
• A well-insulated piping system contributes to further efficiency.

• We purchase our electricity from Energia, providers of 100% green electricity. This is now supported by our newly erected wind turbine and we are already seeing savings of up to 50% (see action plan for our intention to also connect this to the boiler system).
• Thermostatic valves are fitted on all radiators.
• LED bulbs are in use throughout the premises and we also make use of sensor and solar bulbs while staff is reminded to be cognisant of energy use.
• Some lighting is on a timing system where appropriate and guests are encouraged to switch off lights when leaving their bedroom.
• Bathroom towels are only changed on request and guests are invited to refrain from the daily servicing of rooms in exchange for a gift.

• We encourage our guests to get out and see the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark on foot or by bike by providing information on walking trails and cycle routes in the region (both on our website and in-house).
• We also work together with local walking guides.
• Information on public transport is also available onsite.

• We endeavour to purchase from local food suppliers where possible.
• Non-perishable goods are bought in bulk and we avoid the use of singly packaged products where possible.

• To connect the wind turbine to our hot water and heating system.
• Rain Water Harvesting (with an underground tank of 50,000 l for use in the Bed & Breakfast).
• To further reduce the use of plastic.
• To encourage our guests and suppliers to participate in our efforts.
• To replace our own vehicles with electric vehicles and provide EV-charger points for guests.
